What diet do you recommend?

Diet Inside Out doesn’t affiliate with any particular diet. Instead, you choose among several nutritionally proven diets that are commercially available.

I encourage clients to choose the diet that’s the best fit for their eating preferences. Because I try most new diets that arrive in the marketplace, I can guide your choices.

“Diet” is simply what you eat, and our weight is a reflection of our diet. If you want to change your weight, then changing what you eat will help. Diet Inside Out is a companion program aimed at making the diet you choose easier to follow and more effective.

Is an exercise program required?

Exercise is not required – but, clients who choose to exercise often experience improved weight loss results. Keep in mind that Diet Inside Out is more interested in your psychology than in the technical details like diet and exercise. You might ask the question differently: what would exercise mean to my goal?

What does the image of nesting dolls signify?

Nesting dolls are a useful metaphor in two ways. As weight changes, our appearance changes gradually in a fashion similar to nesting dolls – each one the same, yet different. An incomplete set of nesting dolls reveals a longing for wholeness. Peeling off the layers reveals the wholeness of a self reclaimed.

The image of nesting dolls also helps us witness how changing weight means more than a changed body -- our behaviors, thoughts, feelings, and spirit are also changed and we become whole. As we release the weight and all that it means, the grip of all the complex systems is loosened as we become more of our true self.

What do you mean by psycho-spiritual? How is weight loss psycho-spiritual?

“Psycho” is short for psychology. Our psychology is the combined energy of our feelings, thoughts, and senses. “Spiritual” is the meaning we hold for everything in life… Combining the words, psycho-spiritual, suggests that the real work is in discerning the meaning of our combined feelings, thoughts, and senses.

The human condition includes a sense of longing, which I believe is based in our spiritual self. In our busy lives and complex culture, it is easy to mistake that longing for hunger, and we mindlessly try filling that emptiness. Our culture is compulsively consuming without considering the source or meaning of our longing, or the purpose of the emptiness.

Diet Inside Out helps you explore the possible source of your longing. If you are inclined, you may find that drawing on your psycho-spiritual riches can ease the weight change process. If such an approach doesn’t suit you, our work together can focus on changing the behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs that contributed to creating your weight challenge.

What is the Enneagram?

The Enneagram has become one of today’s most popular systems for self-understanding, based on nine distinct personality types. The Enneagram (Ennea is Greek for Nine, gram means a drawn figure – ANY-a-gram) is one of the most comprehensive psychological systems known. Going beyond other modern typologies, this system provides specific prescriptions and strategies for growth. The Enneagram is recognized as a natural bridge between psychology and spirituality.

In addition to her work with Diet Inside Out, Margaret teaches the Enneagram system to a wide variety of groups, including organizations, corporations, and church groups. She is certified by the Enneagram Institute.
